The law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, P.C. will be selecting one student to fill the Pro Bono Summer Fellowship position in our Memphis, TN office. Fellows will work under the supervision of Baker Donelson’s pro bono committee members, and have the opportunity to work on a variety of pro bono projects with attorneys in the firm’s Jackson office. Pro bono projects currently underway in Baker Donelson’s Memphis office include:
• Representation of an inmate who was sentenced to life without parole as a juvenile, and is entitled to resentencing under recent Supreme Court rulings.
• Assist with the efforts to expand ABA Free Legal Answers throughout the U.S., providing support to remove barriers to civil justice for low income and disadvantage people
• Participate in a partnership with the Community Legal Center of Memphis in its efforts to train attorneys in assisting unaccompanied immigrant minors navigate juvenile courts.
• Coordinate efforts to support the Veterans’ Legal Clinic, a monthly clinic to provide legal guidance with matters such as obtaining a driver’s license, gaining employment, and assistance with family law
Pro Bono Fellows will attend meetings and hearings with the attorneys handling these and other matters, research legal issues, and draft pleadings and documents.

An ideal candidate will have established connection to public service work or strong ties to non-profit organizations. The student filling the position will be overseen by two members of the Firm’s pro bono committee and will work exclusively on pro bono assignments. Pro bono credit will be given by Memphis Law.
